Editorial Services
Over the years, we have been asked by authors and publishers alike why we did not offer our editorial services to non-clients. Our answer was quite simple: We didn’t have the extra time. Well, at the end of last year we made the decision to rework our schedule so that in 2008 we would have time to take on a limited number of non-clients’ manuscripts of fiction or nonfiction to proofread or copyedit. And we did so because we are not only very good at proofreading and copyediting, but because we love doing it.
What is the difference between proofing and copyediting?
Proofreading: When we proofread your manuscript, we are looking for and identifying for you corrections that need to be made with respect to typographical errors, punctuation errors, misspellings and formatting inconsistencies.
Copyediting: This service covers all of the above, but may also cover grammar, word usage, capitalization, word breaks, tone, tense and format.
Over the past few years, we’ve ghostwritten five novels. Some we took from screenplay format and turned them into novels, others we worked from outlines. Most became very good selling books for their respective publishers. In addition, between our publishing house and literary agency, we have twelve years of experience of editing, and have helped hundreds of authors improve their manuscripts.
No matter what your experience in the publishing business, most everyone knows that getting an approving eye from a publisher’s editor is difficult at best. The larger publishers require your work to be sent to them via an agent. That agent is not going to sign you to a contract unless your manuscript if free of errors…be they typographical, spelling, grammatical or otherwise.
No one can be their own editor. A manuscript should be noticed for its content and quality, not for its mistakes and errors. For those of you who wish to submit an error free manuscript to a potential agent or publisher, we are now available to help you.
Our rates: We charge $2.00 per page to proofread your ms, $3.50 per page for a copyedit.
We offer a free sample proof/edit, and we do accept credit cards for payment. Remember this: Copyediting is NOT rewriting and we cannot turn a poorly written ms into a well-written one. If writers are looking to lift the level of their writing, they may wish to consult a ghostwriter.
